A person
enters psychotherapy because they are suffering with anxiety,
depression, panic, phobias, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, adolescent rebellion, drug abuse, school phobia, wife
beating, compulsive promiscuity, etc.
When a
person enters psychotherapy the common element among all these
problems is that their behaviour, feelings, thoughts, perceptions
seem irrational. They cannot understand why they feel so angry, so
depressed, so obsessed with triviality. They have lost themselves
and they are stuck in unproductive, unsatisfying, even
self-destructive patterns of feelings and behaviour.
Psychotherapy is not necessarily always nurturing. You need to feel
you can trust your therapist, but it’s not necessary that you always
be comfortable. In fact, if your therapist’s questions don’t stir up
a little discomfort, you may not be getting anywhere. Sometimes
therapy can even feel slightly brutal.
Psychotherapy is not advice. Part of what brings you to treatment is
that you’ve become lost in advice and can’t sort out who to heed;
the last thing you need is yet another voice to consider. The goal
of treatment is for you to rediscover your own voice, your own
priorities, and the courage to act on them.
A good way to think of this distinction between psychotherapy and
something that is therapeutic -- advice, support, teaching about
feelings and behaviour is to consider: Does it foster insight. This
insight is a kind of intensely personal and energizing experience
that needs to be at the heart of all good psychotherapy treatments.
