Course Content
Sports massage treatment to prevent and treat sports injuries, both in and
out of competition. Sports massage preparing for, and aiding recovery at
sports venues. Muscle actions and joint movements related to sporting
performance. Musculo-skeletal injuries. The healing process. The stages of
rehabilitation. Injury prevention. Active, passive and advanced stretching
techniques for conditioning and maintenance purposes. Psychological effects
of injury on athletes and rehabilitation.

Entry Requirements
If you do not
have any previous massage experience you will need to attend
our Introduction to Massage weekend.
Examination System
Continuous
assessment by means of written homework, assignments and home
practice. Home study and practice is over a minimum period of
three months following the school attendance days. A final
assessment date is arranged after the home study period. A fee of £140.00
is payable for the VTCT assessment and verification.
Qualification
Attained
VTCT Level 3
Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy. This qualification is
recognised by the SMA (Sports Massage Association) and the
fitness and sports therapy industries in the UK and overseas.
Professional
Insurance
Membership is available to
the
Federation of Holistic Therapists which offers insurance
and other benefits for sports therapists in the UK through the
International Council of Health, Fitness
& Sports Therapists. You may also join
other organisations such as the Sports Massage Association. Employment
is available in clinics, gyms, sports centres and part-time
freelance, working from home.
The Manchester Therapy Centre
has part-time work available on an ongoing basis for
sports therapists in the Manchester area.
Further Information
The sports
massage certificate course includes ‘hands on’ training in
sports massage. Course times are from 10.30 am to about 4.30
pm depending on the group size.
You will learn how to assess the client and perform sports
massage to a professional standard, plus the background
knowledge necessary to setup in business. The sports massage
certificate qualification is recognised in many countries
outside the UK and gives a good grounding for further
qualifications in holistic therapies.
The group size is kept at ten or below for individual
attention. The venue is at the Manchester School of Massage in
South Manchester.
In certain circumstances we may be able to offer a monthly
payment scheme. Part-time work experience for students is
available at Manchester Therapy Centre.

Course Content
A highly practical course together with underpinning theory.
• Practical anatomy and physiology which will allow you to recognise which
structures require massage.
• Palpation skills to identify bony areas, joint lines, muscle origins and
insertions.
• Client assessment including range of movement and postural symmetry
• Safe and effective application of a range of sports massage techniques.
• The ability to assess the effectiveness of treatment
• Be able to deliver sports massage across a range of clients in different
environments.
• be able to apply sports massage to prevent and manage injury
