HOT STONES MASSAGE TREATMENTS

HOT STONES MASSAGE TREATMENTS AT MANCHESTER THERAPY CENTRE

Hot stone massage is a speciality massage that uses smooth, heated stones. They are often basalt, a black volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well, but they can be other types. The heat is both deeply relaxing and helps tight muscles release. Before you arrive, the massage therapist sanitizes the stones and heats them to 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit.

During the massage, the therapist warms up the body with traditional Swedish massage, then massages you while holding a heated stone. As the stone cools, the therapist replaces it with another. The therapist also leaves heated stones in specific points along your spine, in the palms of your hand, on your belly, or even between your toes to improve the flow of energy in your body. The therapist uses many stones of various shapes and sizes.  The heat of the stones helps muscles release more quickly than in traditional massage.

The stones are used in two ways during the massage. One is to impart heat onto the body by laying stones under the client with a layer of fabric between the client and stone (a sheet or towel) and/or on top of the client, again upon a towel. While these layout stones are delivering concentrated centres of heat, the therapist is simultaneously massaging the client with oiled, heated stones held in the palm of the hand with firm strokes along the muscles of the legs, arms, and torso areas. Stone layout typically will be along both sides of the spine, or along the chakra centers on top and baseball sized stones would be placed in the hands.

An authentic hot stone massage is not simply the "gliding" of heated stones lightly upon the surface of the skin, but rather the stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage at a pressure level comfortable to the client. The client can request light, medium or deep pressure, which is the beauty of the hot stone massage technique. It can be customized in an instant to the request of the client. The hardness of the stones makes for a deep tissue massage and is easy on the joints of the therapists hands.

The heat of the hot stones relaxes muscles, increase the blood flow to the area being worked which further accelerates the healing process and calms the nervous system. The therapist will place the hot stones on points that are thought to be energy centers of the body to rebalance the body and mind.

Hot stone massage is suited to people who tend to feel chilly or who have cold feet. It's also suited for people who have muscle tension but prefer a lighter massage. The heat relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist to work the muscles without using deep pressure. The hot stones are never rough. They are always flat and smooth. The hot stones used on the back are about the size of a large egg, only flat.

The massage therapist often begins by applying oil to the body, which allows the hot stones to glide smoothly along the muscles. You are lying face down, and the massage therapist often then uses the hot stones to massage the back. After the hot stones have relaxed the muscles, the massage therapist may put down the stones and use his or her hands to directly massage the skin. The hot stones may then be placed back on to the body and left for a short period of time. You are then asked to turn over onto your back. The massage therapist may place small hot stones between your toes or in the palm of your hand and repeats the sequence.

Hot Stone Massage is not recommended for people with
an infectious skin disease, rash, or open wound, immediately after surgery, immediately after chemotherapy or radiation and people prone to blood clots as there is a risk of them being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a hot stone massage. Pregnant women should check with their doctor or midwife first if they are considering getting a massage.

Hot Stones Massage treatments are available Monday to Friday 10.00 am - 8.00 pm and Saturday 10.00 am - 5.00 pm.

Hot stone massage is a variation on classic massage therapy. Heated smooth, flat stones are placed on key points on the body. The massage therapist may also hold the stones and use them to massage certain areas of the body. Stones are kept heated in clean, sanitized water between 120 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit (about 50°C).
